Too Much of a Good Thing

At some point in the year, typically when temperatures and humidity are high, frequent rainstorms can be a staple on your weather outlook. While most of the time rain is good for your landscaping, can there be too much of a good thing?

Too much rain can lead to a unique set of problems including fungus, erosion and flooding.

Fungus loves moisture and humidity. While some plants can shake the fungal diseases themselves, others may need the application of a fungicide to help them get through it.

Erosion can occur when too much rain causes the soil to run off, sometimes taking the nutrients your plants need with it. Elevated planting areas can help with erosion as well as mulching and creating runoff areas where the water can go.

Flooding or pooling of water can occur when the rainwater has nowhere to go. Ensuring your yard is properly draining is important to keep plants from receiving too much moisture and keeping away water loving insects like mosquitoes. A landscaping expert can evaluate your yard for solutions to keep the water moving.

Once the rainy season is over it’s important to have your lawn properly aerated to promote better oxygen and nutrient absorption. Additional fertilizer may be needed to replenish the nutrients washed away from heavy rain.
